Granby Educators Identify Areas that Would be Cut Under New Budget Proposal

The $250,000 in proposed cuts to the Granby Board of Education budget would impact some expanded programs school administrators were looking to implement, officials said Thursday.

After the defeat of the budget at referendum Monday, the Board of Finance proposed $330,000 in cuts the 2013-2014 budget. The finance board will meet again following a public hearing next Monday and could potentially make further adjustments one way or another.

If the $250,000 for the school cuts remains in place, Superintendent Alan Addley recommended this week that the school board make the following adjustments.

  • $69,835 for a full-time elementary Spanish teacher. Addley said the teacher would have allowed the schools to further its elementary language commitment and bring Spanish to third and fourth-graders. For 2013-2014 the language was introduced to all 5th and 6th graders.
  • $69,835  — A full-time equivalent for math and science consulting. This would have allowed for support of teachers to help implement common core state standards and help with math interventions. It would have helped for grades 7 to 10, Addley said.
  • $31,330 for a .5 full-time equivalent in guidance. (director of guidance) This would have included expanding services for Grades 6 to 12.
  • $30,000 for gifted & talented (coaching & software)
  • $49,000 reduction for Heating Oil & Bus diesel
Addley expressed the following about the situation.

“I’m clearly disappointed,” Addley said. “I thought we brought a measured, appropriate, responsible budget.”

He added, “I’m still hopeful community members will come out and support the budget."

A public hearing on the proposed annual Budget will take place Monday, April 29, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the Granby Memorial High School Auditorium, 315 Salmon Brook St.

Prior to that, at 6 p.m., the Board of Selectmen will meet about the $80,000 in cuts they may looking at.

At 8 p.m. that night or following the hearing, the Board of Finance will meet for “Consideration of Action on the Revised Proposed 2013-14 Annual Town Budget to be Voted on May 6, 2013.”

The May 6 referendum will be held from noon to 8 p.m. at Town Hall.

If no other adjustments are made, voters would be weighing in on a budget of $41,622,968, a 1.8 percent increase in spending over the 2012-2013 approved budget of $40,881,148.

Due to revaluation, property tax impact would vary.
