Farmington Valley Trails Council Completes Trail Cleanup

This press release was written by Nancy Ansley, media director for the FVTC.

Approximately 230 enthusiastic volunteers turned out on a bright and windy Sunday, April 7, 2013, to participate in the FVTC’s fourth annual Trail Clean-Up Day, covering more than 38 miles of trails from Farmington all the way into Massachusetts.

The clean-up effort grew again this year, encompassing four staging areas covering the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail and the River Trail.

“Paine’s supplied four large 6 cubic yard dumpsters, one for each of the staging areas. We collected more than 20 cubic yards of trash, a record, and we want to thank Paine’s for their support of our trails which are such an important asset of the Farmington Valley”, commented Diane Moody, who coordinated the event as Clean-up Project Manager.

Stop & Shop in Simsbury donated cleaning supplies, water and snacks for the hard working volunteers; as well as many employee/volunteers from the Simsbury, Unionville, Bristol, and Granby stores to help in the clean-up effort.

“The Trails Council is grateful to Stop & Shop for their substantial support of the Valley's multi-use trail system. We also could not hold this event without the enthusiastic support of all our other members and friends, to whom we owe our thanks once again,"said Bruce Donald, FVTC's President.

Additional thanks go to the staging area managers, including Dwight Weed, Larry Linonis, Pattie Jacobus, Norm Hausmann, Matt Graeber, Maryanne Krajcik and Jim Devoe who helped the volunteers with trash collection gear and directions to their assigned clean-up areas.

The day ended with a barbeque for all volunteers held at picturesque Flamig Farm in Simsbury.  Please make a note of our 16th annual Trails in Motion event on June 1st.
