C-HIT campers work on their stories in the UConn journalism lab.

I would love to know just what us being taught to journalists today. Do they cover things likeRead More "Biased reporting 101" or "Never Insert yourself or your personal views into your reporting" or make sure you verify both sides of an issue with at least 3 credible sources?" Or most important : you are the advocats of The People first and always seek the truth whether or not it's what you the reporter wants to believe or your editor wants you to write. Just curious.

I teach journalism at UConn and at these workshops for high school students. I can tell you that myRead More students are taught to leave themselves and their opinions out of stories, to generally verify information with at least two credible sources, to interview people on all sides of an issue and that their aim is to serve the public. Thank you for your interest.

Maybe they could tackle the subject of whether it is ethical and legal to have gender-specificRead More programs that exclude one sex for another in publicly funded schools which are geared toward cariculum in the sciences. Nothing like picking and choosing winners and violating civil rights at the same time..

James you have just proved my point. Of course it doesn't apply to ALL unwed mothers, just as anyRead More statement doesn't always apply to ALL! However I am stating FACTS and it does apply to more than it should; but just the mentioning of a Fact has you feeling uncomfortable. Ergo that is exactly why the problems will never be addressed; because the mere mention of it makes you feel guilty, uncomfortable and or insecure about discussing it! And the so Called Community Leaders are counting on just that!

Linda, Sorry to react to your post so late,I was away( not prison ). I reacted to what you saidRead More earlier about unwed mothers. To which you had no disclaimer because it said unwed mothers only. Now you say," of course it doesn't apply to ALL unwed mothers".To me you're the one sounding like you want it both ways and that sounds more like our fumbling politicans, than my post. That said, I do understand where you're coming from and posts are not the easiest way to state it sometimes.Your attack on how I feel is unwarrented just because I pointed out a flaw in your post. Sorry about that hope to hear from you soon.

James glad you found your way home lol. I truly wasn't trying to attack your comment, merely tryingRead More to clear up the confusion on my earlier posting. In a nut shell James, we are (as tax payers) being forced to pay for whatever little program pops in their heads. Unfortunately the ones already in place aren't cancelled, it's just a process of adding more and more programs that have been proven not to work, as well as picking up the pieces of those who aren't doing their jobs. I'm all for helping, but lets find out what works, along with squashing those that don't - not double programs only to find out none work!! Enjoy whatever up and coming holiday you chose to celebrate. Not sure about you, but I'm not finding this new improved Patch as stimulating as when it was more focused on our individual town issues, so haven't been on much either!

Knowing who spends the most or least isn't particularly helpful knowledge. How strong are the schoolRead More systems? What is important is to determine the value of the dollars spent. Please do an analysis of who spends the least amount with the highest test scores in their DRG. Thanks!

You hear that noise? That's your wallet and it's being pick clean. You see that on the horizon?Read More That's the common core, it's coming to pick clean our school budgets. Common core is being driven by Obama's Socialist friends looking to make quick money from the rest of us.... The whole thing is a scam

This might be more helpful if we couold see a lowest spending versus test score performanceRead More comparison. I would like to see the value of the dollars spent - measure school performance by how much is spent. I bet Granby is in that mix.

I also came across this yesterday. There are 3 videos. The third one is a very concerned parentRead More from Arkansas. I hope more parents stand up to get rid of Common Core. http://patriotaction.net/forum/topic/show?id=2600775%3ATopic%3A6635270&xgs=1&xg_source=msg_share_topic

How about actually going to the Common Core website to find out what the CC Standards are? ThatRead More parent in Arkansas is an idiot. She's complaining about the Singapore math curriculum--it has nothing to do with the implementation of Common Core. Common Core does not specify the use of any of the techniques, procedures, methods or formulas that people like the Arkansas mother are complaining about.

Tuition is out of control but these guys seem to have their salaries down pat. I wonder if theseRead More guys could actually run a for profit corporation, or is the only thing they are good at is being at the head of the Ivory walls?

Common Core = Socialism. Looks like we are ceding our local control of schools over to the Fed'sRead More and the State. Let the Democrats fill out kids with wonderful Socialist ideology. Thanks my liberal friends. The common core is evil brought upon our children in the guise of raising educational standards.

YES!!! It not only teaches them the actual skill of writing and reading cursive, but it it requiresRead More practice, patience and perseverance -- 3 things we really need to emphasize now that our world is moving so fast! The overuse of computers and internet has conditioned most of us to expect instant answers and we have difficulty sticking to rote tasks, such as practicing handwriting, for any length of time. An added bonus of teaching cursive is the fine motor development many kids are lacking today because they are on a keyboard rather than actually writing.
Paul Bahre November 15, 2013 at 09:03 am
I'm disgraphic and writing cursive to me was and is torture. I think we need to at least teachRead More children how to read it but for the sake of the teachers and future generations we need to make sure kids can at least print correctly. Better yet they all should learn to type. Of course I don't believe in the core curriculum. Education should be a local matter and not a national matter or even a state concern. We fund education locally. Since we fund education locally then if we are going to go with a state mandated curriculum or a national curriculum, then why do we even need a local school board? And we also have hired people who work for our school system who's only job is to come up with an approved curriculum so we are wasting our money. No we are not. We need to reject the common curriculum and maintain control of what we want to teach our children in our town. We don't need someone like Obama who decides that our children need to be indoctrinated with the latest socialist pablum or fascist pablum. We don't need Washington or even Hartford telling us what to teach our children.

Thanks for your many years of service to Granby!
Ron November 5, 2013 at 08:21 pm
so glad that arrogant and pompous guy is gone. just because you spend a lot of years doingRead More something doesn't mean its good in my opinion.
Happy Percy November 5, 2013 at 09:51 pm
Ron, Ron, I agree with you 100%! Let's look, built a middle school that was soon too small andRead More built on a landlocked area. New athletic fields; while nice, missed the school population increase, and if CT including Granby can't create jobs and reduce taxes, those fields will become empty. Poor planing and lack of proper planning has always been an issue, including but not limited to the worthless Community Gym! Good riddance!

Granby HS looks at students FB I know that for sure as a parent. Not that it's a bad thing. KidsRead More just have to learn that stuff they want no one to know should never go on the internet.
