Jonathan, the iconic mascot for the University of Connecticut’s athletics programs, is getting a makeover.
University officials have announced they want to replace the blue and white image of the Husky dog, his tongue hanging out, to a tougher-looking image of the canine.
The new logo will be revealed later this spring, possibly as soon as April, UConn’s student newspaper, the Daily Campus reports.
The current Husky logo appears on a wide variety of UConn programs, products and buildings. It has been the official logo for UConn’s athletic teams since 1996, according to the Daily Campus story. The university has used an image of a Husky dog as a logo since the 1930s, the newspaper says.
Mike Enright, a spokesman for UConn’s athletics department, told the student newspaper that updating a logo is not unusual for most institutions and that more information on UConn’s new Jonathan will be released when the new logo is unveiled in the spring.
“We acknowledge that we are rebranding, like a lot of companies and schools do. We are going to debut things in April. We are trying to make a splash,” Enright told the blog Capitol Watch. “We are working with Nike as our apparel partner. There is no cost involved.”
