East Granby High School and Asnuntuck Community College have partnered to offer East Granby students the opportunity to earn an associate's degree or career certificate with just one year of post-high school education.
The program combines classes at East Granby High School and Asnuntuck with internships at local manufacturing businesses to offer associates degrees and certificates in the manufacturing sector. Students benefit from an integrated program developed between the educational institutions and local businesses, scholarships offered by Asnuntuck and the ability to finish school and enter the workforce only one year after their high school graduation.
“Students can pursue career strands, internships, on-the-job training, summer externships and gain experience using state of the art technologies at Asnuntuck Community College and in East Granby manufacturing businesses,” states literature distributed about the program by the school district.
Certificates and associates degrees in the following fields are part of the integrated program: precision machining and CNC technology; welding technology; and electronics controls technology. The diverse array of courses offered gives students the ability to choose a field in which they are interested.
The program allows students wishing to pursue further coursework and degrees in their chosen fields the opportunity to enter Central Connecticut State University’s technology studies program. The college credits earned at Asnuntuck and in advanced placement classes at East Granby High School can be transferred to Connecticut’s state university system and the University of Connecticut. Additionally, students who complete the fifth year program can matriculate to the University of Hartford as juniors, with the equivalent of two years of college study already completed.
The costs associated with the program are manageable for the East Granby school district. A scholarship fund will pay for students’ first semester at Asnuntuck and local companies sponsoring the students will pay for the second, as well as providing paid and scholarship internship opportunities.
The fifth-year program includes about 30 credits worth of classes at Asnuntuck along with an internship. The courses taken can also be used to fulfill graduation requirements in East Granby.
