Connecticut State College Officials Considering Hefty Tuition Hikes

The increases being considered by higher education officials would affect the state's community colleges and four state-run universities: Western, Southern, Central and Eastern.

The state's Board of Regents for Higher Education is considering a more than 12 percent hike in tuition for students who attend state community colleges or one of the four state-run universities, the Connecticut Mirror reports.

Officials for the board of regents blame reductions in state funding, mandated pay raises for teachers and declining enrollments for the tuition hikes that might be needed.

The increases would impact the 12 community colleges across Connecticut that are run by the state, as well as the four state universities that also fall under the board of regents' authority, Western, Eastern, Southern and Central state universities.

Under the proposal, tuition and fees at the state universities would increase $1,060 for commuters and $1,375 for students living on campus, the Mirror reports. Commuters now pay $8,556 to attend one of the schools full time and those who live on campus pay $19,119.

The proposed tuition changes would not affect the University of Connecticut, which operates under a separate system.

Not sure about some of the other reasons, but as far as declining enrollment? Tunxis in Farmington, which I attend, has so many enrolled and attending students that cars are parked on the grass, and shuttles have been set up from other nearby parking lots...I really doubt overall enrollment is down.

Maybe with the reduced enrollment time to lay-off some teachers? Brilliant!!!!

I know University of Hartford is going down hill fast. They are accepting almost anyone and classes are shrinking. They raise the tuition by 3.75% every year and send a deceptive letter to the students explaining why it is being raised. Typically showing the students one most of the fees are not being raised while not telling them a different fee is being raised over 300%.

The problem is that our state legislatures and Governor have bleed this state dry. They have attracted no business and we have no tax base left in the state. If they focused on growing the tax base instead of scaring it off we might have enough in the till to send our children to college. No our lawmakers and Governor are too stupid to grasp that simple concept.

The "Simple Concept" is an across the Board cut in government salaries along with getting rid of the Teacher's Union that has destroyed Public education. If they want to keep their jobs it should be mandatory for drug testing for all teachers and Administrators.

Happy, that would never ever happen in this state. The People's Republik of CT embraces the unions. The Unions are the power behind the thrown. Remember the last Govonor who messed with the Unions. He fired a third of them went on vacation then stories started to appear in the Courant about upgrades to his shack in Hebron. Before we knew it he was in jail. Long short don't mess with the Unions in CT if you hold dear your life and liberty.

I don't agree with drug testing as I feel that is an invasive intrusion of privacy. What a person put's into their bodies is their business. If someone shows up to work drunk or so high that I can tell they are incapacitated then it becomes an issue. But across the board drug testing for everyone I have never supported such policies.

Not true, these are people dealing with children, if other proffesions require it, then this one should too!

Remember it's for the CHILDREN!!!!!

And the local school boards are doing the same thing, making living here in Connecticut darn right impossible. As long as the people in charge are in charge of the purse strings , you will have a top heavy anything, be it local school districts or sate run schools. Unions are the problem here. No control. Time for a revolution.
