New East Granby Annual Budget Town Meeting and Referendum Dates Set

Budget also lowered, pending recount results.

The following information was provided by East Granby First Selectman James Hayden and assumes a recount will not change the result of the budget referendum held earlier this week.

The Referendum for the East Granby Annual Budget was held on Tuesday, May 7th and was defeated by a vote of 618 for and 622 against.

As a result, the Board of Selectman met on May 8th and called for a new Town Meeting to be held at the Senior and Community Center on Wednesday, May 15th at 7:30 pm.

There will not be a budget vote taken at the Town Meeting but the Boards of Finance, Selectman and Education will present the revised budget and answer questions.

The Town Meeting will then set the polling hours and adjourn to a machine ballot referendum called by the Board of Selectman for May 22nd at the Town’s traditional polling place, the East Granby Senior and Community Center.

The Board of Finance also met on May 8th and voted to reduce the proposed budget from $20,093,553 to $20,043,553.

The new budget as recommended by the Board of Finance proposes to fund General Government at $4,344,540 or a 3% increase over the current year, the Board of Education budget was reduced by $50,000 to $14,671,000 or a 4.5% increase over the current year, Debt Service was set at $578,013 and the Capital Reserve Fund was funded at $450,000.

The Board of Finance estimates that the proposed budget would call for a 3.30% increase in taxes.
