Serious Single-Car Accident in East Granby Leaves Only Occupant Relatively Unharmed

Despite a severe crash which took the car off its wheel base, off the road and into a utility pole, the single occupant walked away from the crash Wednesday afternoon in East Granby.

A scary one-car accident scene on Route 187 in East Granby Wednesday afternoon saw the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle walk away relatively unharmed, despite the vehicle tracking off the road, onto the guard rail and into a utility pole.

The occupant, who Assistant Chief Wayne Bindas could not identify but said was likely a local resident, refused medical treatment for various minor injuries and was picked up and removed from the scene by his spouse.

"The department members did a good job stabilizing the vehicle and helping him out of the vehicle," Bindas said.

The vehicle, which shattered but didn't knock over a utility pole, was stabilized by wooden boards placed and wedged by East Granby Volunteer Fire Department personnel. Utility workers were on the scene by 4:30 p.m. with a replacement pole. Utility service was not affected by the crash.

The accident happened on Route 187 north, only a few hundred feet from that road's intersection with Route 20. Traffic was slightly slowed but both lanes are open to traffic.
