[Updated May 16] Route 219 Reopens in Granby After Two Separate Accidents

Driver in first accident sustains minor injuries after motor vehicle jumps a guardrail and hits a utility pole.

[Updated Thursday, May 17] The driver of the vehicle in the first accident has been identified by Granby police as Paul Langlois, 58, of Granby. He was transported to Hartford Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

[Updated Wednesday, May 16] According to Capt. William Tyler of the Granby Police Department, the vehicle from the first accident was a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer. The driver was transported to Hartford Hospital with minor injuries, according to Tyler, and the vehicle snapped a utility pole, causing downed power lines at Route 219 by Old Orchard Road at 10:48 p.m. Sunday. The driver's identity has not yet been released.

According to Tyler, the second accident was reported at 10:54 p.m., before the arrival of officers to the first call.

Tyler said that southbound 1999 Chevrolet pickup operated by Zachary Mills, 19 of Granby, struck the downed wires from the first incident.

"Mills was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was uninjured," Tyler wrote in an e-mail. "The wires became entangled with the vehicle, causing damage to the front end and exhaust system. The vehicle was able to be driven from the scene after the wires were made safe and removed from the vehicle."

Route 219 in West Granby has reopened after being closed for over an hour Sunday evening after two separate motor vehicle accidents took place in the same location.

According a Granby police dispatcher, the first accident, which took place around 11 p.m., resulted from a motor vehicle jumping a guardrail and hitting a utility pole, causing downed power lines. The driver, who sustained minor injuries and was transported to an undisclosed hospital, was extricated from the motor vehicle by the Lost Acres Fire Department.

A crew from Connecticut Light & Power is replacing the utility pole; the work should be completed by morning, according to Granby police.

Details from the second accident, which took place shortly after the first accident, were not released, though there were no injuries reported.

Neither of the drivers’ identities in the accidents have been released by police as of 1 a.m. Monday.
