Granby Police Officer Honored for Meritorious Service

Officer Joe Adams pursued a suspect in a home invasion robbery.

A Granby police officer has been honored with the Medal for Meritorious Service from the Connecticut State Police for his work in tracking a suspect in a home invasion robbery last summer.

The award is given to those who "render service with a high degree of alertness, perseverance and superior judgment in the performance of a difficult task resulting in the protection of life, recovery of property, the prevention of — or solving of — a major crime or the apprehension of an armed or dangerous person." Adams received the medal in a ceremony on Monday.

According to a news release from the Granby police, this is why Adams was honored:

"On Aug. 12, 2012, Officer Adams responded to a call for assistance from the State Police investigating a home invasion robbery in Barkhamsted in which an elderly victim was assaulted by a female suspect. The suspect had been involved in a car accident the previous day in Granby. Officer Adams provided information, photographs and tactical assistance.

"Officer Adams surveilled a likely location of the suspect in Granby and observed the suspect’s vehicle arrive. The Trooper went to the front door and Officer Adams, suspecting the suspect might flee, watched the other exit. Sure enough, the suspect fled out of the back door towards the woods.

"Officer Adams pursued the suspect and forced her to attempt to hide under a swing set, where she was taken into custody. Evidence from the incident, including the victim’s broken telephone, wallet, and other belongings, were recovered from the assailant’s vehicle. She was charged with numerous felony crimes."
