A Farmington police officer shot and killed a man carrying a gun when officers responded to a domestic violence call on Butternut Drive late Thursday evening.
Police responded at 10:43 p.m. to investigate after receiving reports of a violent domestic disturbance "between a father and his adult son" at 3 Butternut Drive, Farmington police said in a press release.
"Upon their arrival officers were confronted in the street by an adult male brandishing a firearm," Lt. Colin Ryan, public information officer for the Farmington Police Department, stated in a press release sent to media just before 2 a.m. "Officers engaged the individual and one Farmington officer shot the male suspect. The male was pronounced dead at the scene."
Ryan said that police notified the State's Attorney's Office about the incident. The shooting remains under investigation.
Police have not released the name of the officers involved or the identity of the man killed at this time.
The department asks that anyone who witnessed the shooting or who has information to call the Farmington Police Department at 860-675-2400.
Coppermine Road is closed near Butternut Drive "while the investigation continues," police said.
