Larceny Is the Top Crime in Granby, East Granby

Items stolen from cars are a top larceny in both towns.

The vast majority of crimes committed in Granby and East Granby are larcenies, with burglaries coming in a distant second.

According to the most recent crime statistics available from the state, there were 126 crimes committed in Granby in 2011 and 37 in East Granby. Of those, there were 89 were larcenies committed in Granby and 21 in East Granby.

The crime statistics come from the "Annual Report of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program," which is published by the Crimes Analysis Unit of Connecticut's Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection.

In 2011, Granby police cleared 12 of its 89 larceny cases while East Granby cleared 1 of 21. "Crimes cleared" refers to the number of crimes that either resulted in an arrest, or "some element beyond police control" precluded the arrest of the offender, (such as the death of the offender) according to the description contained in the crime report.

By far the greatest losses in Granby came from the 13 larcenies of items from motor vehicles, amounting to $82,752. In East Granby, the six larcenies from motor vehicles amounted to $7,938.

The first table breaks down the number of crimes by type. The second and third tables break down the most common crimes, larcenies and burglaries, by several variables including home burglaries and car break-ins.

Simple assaults are not included in the overall crime numbers, but there were 81 in Granby and 15 in East Granby in 2011.
