NAFTA at 20: "Fast Track" More Problems

Trade deficits mean lost US jobs and manufacturing capacity.
Trade deficits mean lost US jobs and manufacturing capacity.
Why has America lost 5.5 million manufacturing jobs in the 21st century?  Why are our stores full of imports while our country has lost over 54,000 factories since 2000?  Why has so much of our productive economy --and our jobs, tax base, and opportunities for the future-- been moved offshore?

The story of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) gives key insight into the crisis our country faces:

Paul, Obama is just another corporatist who is doing the bidding of globalized corporations. He let 600 corporate lobbyists draft the TPP for 2 years now. The whole right-left, lib-conserv debate misses the point. The politicians attract voters by giving us culture war, but the real issues of governance have been quite bi-partisan. Free Trade treaties are a good example. Consider that virtually every FTA since NAFTA was initiated by a President from one party and signed by a President of the other party. Bush 1 started the NAFTA signed by Clinton. Bush 2 started the KORUS and Colombia and Panama FTAs signed by Obama, and Bush 2 initiated the TPP that Obama is trying to finish. The best way to have a one-party state is to make the people think it is a 2-party state. The fact is, both parties are funded by and have an influence-pedaling revolving door with the globalized corporations that have zero loyalty to the USA.

Will you are so correct. Everyone wants to know why wall streat is dong so well when the rest of the American population is not. Why isn't main street sharing in Wall streets amazing gains? Because they are practicing business across international borders without regard to any respect for labor and labor costs. The supreme court said that corporations were legal people. If I got to dodge my taxes like these international corporations do, I would be thrown in jail for tax evasion. Of course Obama, along with the past 5 presidents have not real respect for labor, unless it's to get votes from the Unions. this is evidenced by all the outsourcing done on the development of the health care exchanges. Most of the exchanges including CT's have outsourced even the call centers. So the supreme court says that Obama Care is constitutional because it's a tax and Obama and Malloy are throwing our heard earned and hard to come by tax dollars to outsourced labor pools.

OK guys, so Obama is a Socialist and a Corporatist?. Is such a thing even possible? Make up your mind!!

Look at the Central Planning Committee in China. All Socialists and all corporatist.

I don't think we should fixate on various "ist" categorizations. Much more important is a pragmatic look at what works and what doesn't, at what the actual results are than the theoretical problems and benefits. The article I posted above is really just a portal to the longer article linked above. If you read the actual article, it documents that 20 years of NAFTA have decimated our country's manufacturing and employment and wages. This NAFTA experience is important to understand because just 2 days ago legislation was introduced in Congress to give "fast track" authorization to the President to negotiate 2 more FTAs on the NAFTA model. The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) will expand the NAFTA model to our trade with Asia, Europe and the rest of Latin America. Click the link above to take a sober look at what NAFTA shows us those new Free Trade treaties will do America!
