Granby memorial high school charging students to park??

Why does the high school charge us,parents/students to park when we already pay some of the highest taxes. where does this money go? $50 bucks to park seems like a scam, are they going to rent out the lockers for my kids books also? the town should have a police officer directing traffic at what seems like the most dangerous intersection in town in the morning. Getting in and out of the high school is a nightmare and very dangerous.

I believe a parking fee was originally established to discourage students from driving their vehicles to school. The need for some sort of traffic control at the school driveway is obvious. Why your traffic authority has seen fit to ignore this obvious need is interesting. Is it because a shift change is in progress? Is it the expense of sending officers to a training school to learn the basics of traffic control? With what we see now when officers try to control traffic, it's a miracle they are not run over. Many times they are out on the roadway without their traffic vests, or without personal illumination (flash lights, wands etc.) or against backgrounds making them virtually invisible to the motorist. And Floydville Rd/ Rt. 10 intersection is more dangerous than East St./Quarry Rd./ Rt. 10 intersection????

no reason to charge other than they can, if there is a way to get money they will do it that is obvious. when i was in high school we drove and it was no big deal, no assigned spots, nothing. never a probem. it is all about control and money as i see it.

I do not have high school aged children but charging to park or requiring students to purchase permits to park is nothing unique to Granby, many schools require permits for students to park (the high school I went to requires the purchase of permits) because there are not enough spaces for everyone who wants to drive their own car. In fact parking is a problem a lot of places these days, there just aren't enough spots for people to park. Carpooling or taking the bus (paid for by taxpayers) is always an option.

It is about money. Schools and towns are not required to provide parking for students. Providing extra parking for them is added cost to everyone and therefore a fee provides some equity AND some payment for the construction and upkeep. We all pay to have them plowed, painted, etc. so to me the fee seems small for the privilege. Again, there is the bus.

wrong on the pond. those parking spaces and how many are there are dictated by P&Z guidelines, so if not one student drove they would have to be there based on many factors that P&Z consider. charging for spaces does not reduce how any kids would like to park there, it is about independence and there is nothing wrong with that. I have had 2 go through it and one is currently going. They would prefer not to ride bus if possible. I thought the liberal NEA and all their members were about choice, well this is a choice that doesn't harm anyone. our taxes have already paid for those parking spots, there should be no other fees for parking for a town student whos' family pays taxes.

P&Z doesn't dictate quantity, just minimal requirements. If this is a choice, then you should be perfectly happy at such a minimal cost. Step back and look at it from the other side. There IS additional cost unless your kids arrive early with their pain brushes and shovels.

look at design and minutes for the school, parking was a P&Z issue, minutes reflect it based on auditorium, gym, teachers and so on. just another money grab. schools have provided parking for students from the beginning and should continue to. my friends who went to suffield, east granby, windsor locks, and enfield years ago never paid a dime to park at school. all that has changed is town and school leaders spending more and more and looking for any way to suck more money from tax payers. It may not affect many but it is another tool to take more and more from tax payers. What's next a fee to drop kids off if you don't ride bus or maybe an additional fee to take a bus. Just because it is done and people pay it doesn't make it right, the kids and parents are in no position to negotiate, pay it or don't drive.
