I don't think it is all that funny to hear about a company that employs 18,000 people going out of business. I think it is a very sad thing and nothing to joke about.

Jane, this is a tribute. He's riding off into the sunset and the sun (along with us) is sad. We often pay tribute to the things and people we love and miss in our strips. Nothing about this situation makes us happy at the studio. We are in no way mocking the loss of employment or product. Thanks for reading.

Of course it's a tribute! How could it not be interpreted that way?! John Wayne was pictured in a similar way when he dies. Guess you must be of-a-certain-age to understand the symbolism. Keep the comics coming!
