How to Help Families Affected by Newtown School Shooting

People all over the world want to know how to help Sandy Hook residents following Friday's horrifying mass shooting. Post "I want to help" in this comment thread to get updates on what you can do.

In the wake of the unimaginable tragedy at Sandy Hook School Friday people from all over the world — in Connecticut, California, Canada and much farther away in Australia and India — sent an outpouring of support and want to know how they can help.

If you want to be notified via e-mail of ways to provide comfort and support during this difficult time, please post in the comments section: "I want to help."

Patch will continue to update this article with ways to help — posting updates to the story as well as in the comments thread, triggering an email notification to commenters — and if you know of an organization or fundraiser providing assistance, let us know in the comments section, too.

Already the United Way of Western Connecticut, in partnership with Newtown Savings Bank, created the Sandy Hook School Support Fund to help provide support services to the families and community that are affected.

Check donations may be mailed to:

Mental Health Professionals should sign up with the state of CT or the American Red Cross to offer clinical skills and time. There is a great need which will grow the more time goes on.

Ok we have all posted at one time or another something in reference to the CT shooting. I feel that we need to help those kids that have survived and honor those whom didnt. I feel that there will be too many horrible memories in that school for the teachers and the students. May I suggest that we all try and donate a little something to help them build a new school in memory of the victims. They are now talking about busing the kids to a neighboring town for school. With everyones help I am sure we can make this happen. I am sure that you can send donations to the Newtown Police Department, at this time thats where they are asking people to send cards and letters. Please make sure to let them know its a donation to a new school in memory of the victims. Together we can help. Even if its only a dollar. PLEASE RE-POST!

I am trying to send some cards, masses and inspirational notes. I want to help. Where can I mail these types of items? Thank you so much. Our hearts are with you all. You are all family and your children are our children. Your God is our God. We will pray that He will comfort and keep you safe in His care. It has broken the hearts of many, but not the spirit. He will give you courage and strength to find peace in knowing they are all together. Our new angels have arrived at this holy time. Love to you all.

Anyone can help by donating a little of their time to the Quilt2heal cause created by Dr. Paula deSilva in Avon, CT! The facebook link is: www.facebook.com/quilt2heal. we are organizing volunteers to create quilts in memoriam of each of the 26 children and adults, and they will be sent to their families in an attempt to bring some degree of comfort. We have received an overwhelming amount of support after the cause was mentioned on channel 3 news this morning, and just started a Facebook group in hopes of expanding. We are asking that those close to Avon would be able to come to help iron, cut, measure, and sew the patches for the quilts. and those that cannot participate in that way are asked for their donations to: Sandy Hook-Quilts2Heal c/o Farmington Savings Bank 427 West Avon Rd. Avon, CT 06001 All extra proceeds will go to the Sandy Hook PTA. Even simply posting a link to our page on yours would be greatly appreciated, and may help us out a lot. We are sincerely hope that we can make even a small difference in the lives of the families. If you need more information, feel free to email me at ekleis15@g.holycross.edu
