Granby, East Granby Face the Big Dig; Malloy Orders All Roads Closed

As the blizzard leaves towns in snow removal mode, the state issues warning on damaging snow accumulations.

Snow that started about 9 a.m. Friday continued to fall throughout the day and night, leaving Granby and East Granby under massive amounts of snow. Early Saturday morning, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy ordered all roads in Connecticut closed until further notice.

"It's critical right now that residents stay off the roads, so that our plows can continue their efforts to clear our streets and highways," Malloy said. "This is a record setting storm. It's going to take time to dig out of the snow. Stalled or abandoned vehicles will only slow that process. Unless you face an emergency, please stay put."

Saturday is all about digging out and getting power restored to those who lost it. The excessive snow accumulation also creates some serious safety issues.

The state Department of Construction has issued this warning:

Homeowners and business owners that "should be alert to signs of increased stress due to snow and ice overloading. Visible signs such as new or enlarged cracks in walls, sagging roof lines, or water leaks may be indications of excessive snow accumulation. If such signs are observed, an owner may want to remove some snow accumulation to relieve the load on their roof. Extreme caution should be taken to insure personal safety and to avoid damage to the roof while removing ice and snow.

"Also, vents, air intakes or exhausts for appliances such as boilers, furnaces, hot water heaters, generators or clothes dryers may become blocked by drifting or accumulated snow. Blocked openings have the potential to cause carbon monoxide to build up in buildings. This is a greater concern for direct vented appliances whose discharge vents and air intakes are located near the ground where much higher snow accumulation could occur due to drifting. Snow should be cleared away from openings."

Well done Granby. Having a blog will definitely encourage the residents and provide transparency.

I don't know about the behavior problems but it becomes an excuse to give the children amphetaminesRead More which increases performance in school. Since we live in a school district where performance is everything, you get a lot of parents lining up for the smart pills. As these pills will help anyone get their school work done and will help anyone concentrate. Look even the MLB has noticed an increase in ADHD: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3822193

1. Russia is not a communist state. It's a Nationalist nominal democracy / dictatorship. There isRead More private ownership there the economy there is solidly capitalistic. China is Communist in government but with a capitalist economy. North Korea is nominally a Communist state but in actuality it's a dynastic dictatorship run by one family. Now it's in China's best interest to have a peaceful pacific rim. China is making money hand over fist and it's all because of his inexhaustible labor supply. If a nuclear war hit the Korean peninsula it would be bad for China because it would rock some of China's major trading partners. I don't think China and Russia want to wipe the US off the map. They like having us around just just don't want us to be the only major super power around.

More of the same from communist nations that only wish for our ultimate demise. What do they, theRead More main communist countries (Russia and China), see in the US now? An incredibly weak and ineffective national leader with 3+ more years left. A country bogged down in "going nowhere wars." A country moving toward fiscal collapse. A country that has China as its greatest "stockholder." A country with citizens looking for the gov't to provide them with everything. A country with citizens with have incredibly poor historical perspective (see some of the above comments in this blog). Do you really think Russia and China (who recently met and did nice/nice with each other) are going to let this golden opportunity pass without taking advantage of it? What a great time for a our historical enemies to get us bogged down in a war with North Korea? If we do, wait and see when China make moves on Taiwan. Russia will expedite its military growth and instigate Iranian militancy toward Israel a US ally in the Mideast. That's only the beginning.

Joe, 1. We are not in Iran. 2. We are not fighting in N. Africa. 3. We are in Afghanistan but weRead More are in the process of pulling out and will be leaving some support there. DHS and Drug Cartels are a matter of Border security and have nothing to bellicose threats from North Korea.

The biggest thing out of this info is that it is made 100% clear to all of us that Adam did not haveRead More restricted access to the weapons. At the root of it, then, is a thoughtless, negligent gunowner that did not safely secure her weapons from unauthorized user. that's the root cause failure here. With safe storage no other issues would have mattered. Had his mother survived, she should and would have faced serious criminal charges for abetting this nightmare. Adam's mental state certainly could have been aided by a better medical system and care, but with out access to the weapons, his rampage would not have been able to start. So, the knee jerk reaction is to take guns away from law abiding citizens instead of insuring safe storage of said legally aquired guns.

Peter I understand your thought process, but the answer is because we live in a free society. ThisRead More occurred because we have liberty and freedom. The issue is that after 25 years of school shootings in Gun Free Zones, there should have been armed security. Force the glory killers to find another location for their evil deeds. Isnt a shame that Lanza learned over two years how and where to do this based on previous situations, yet sane adults have lacked the same ability to learn from previous situations on how to deter these. When the true result of what had happened came to light I can tell you that I sat in front of the TV crying for the loss of the children that age, and also screaming at the TV, "when will you blank liberals learn?" I'm not a mass murderer, but we now that he chose this location for body count, so if a nut job saw that opportunity, then it was adults who didnt want to believe it could happen there and rolled the dice with the lives of the children there... all in the name of Utopian gun free zones because these are "places of learning and peace." He makes me sick, his mother makes me sick, and people that still want Gun Free Zones even now make me sick

Sadly Joe, you are spot on
