The Simsbury Summer Theatre will be presenting Rodgers and Hammerstein’s wonderful Broadway musical “Carousel” on July 30 and 31 and August 1 and 2. Tickets are available online atwww.simsburysummertheatre.org. Ticket information line: 860-951-6860.

This is the 49th show for the non-profit, self-funded organization; SST provides a comprehensive theatre experience for high school and college students who love musical theatre and want to learn more about acting, singing, dancing and technical theatre.  SST members come from towns all over the Farmington Valley and Western Massachusetts, and many are planning a career in theatre and music.

SST’s professional staff includes 16-year artistic director and Simsbury resident Joe Campolieta, Hartt School teacher and music director Jack A. Pott, and New England School of Dance and 15-year SST choreographer Lesley Lambert.  Under their direction and that of the other professional staff members,  SST members spend six weeks at the Werner Centennial Theater rehearsing blocking, learning songs and dances, constructing sets and participating in makeup, hair, acting and other workshops to hone our skills.   Simsbury Summer Theatre alumni have gone on to star on Broadway, regional and national tours as well as countless community theatre productions.  SST also counts among  its alumni orchestra conductors, instrumental soloists and symphony members, technical theatre professionals, playwrights, Disney characters, composers and Emmy, Tony, and Oscar nominees and winners.

“Carousel” is one of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most beloved musicals and their personal favorite. Voted one of Time Magazine’s best musicals of the 20th century, Carousel is a classic tale of love, loss and redemption. Set on the New England coast in Ogunquit, Maine, Carousel tells the story of Julie Jordan, a young mill girl, who gives her heart to the womanizing carnival barker Billy Bigelow, and Julie’s naïve and silly friend, Carrie Pipperidge, who falls for fisherman Enoch Snow.  The musical, which is a charming, sometimes funny, sometimes breathtaking, always moving story, includes memorable songs such as “June is Bustin’ Out All Over,” “If I Loved You,” “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” and “It’s Been a Real Nice Clambake.”

All performances are at 7 p.m. at the Werner Centennial Theater on the grounds of Westminster School.
