NBC Weatherman Bob Maxon Leaves Students Smiling and Satisfied at The Cobb School in Simsbury

On Wednesday, December 4th Cobb School’s Lower Elementary welcomed a very special guest.  NBC Weatherman Bob Maxon presented a lesson on weather, focusing on the weather we experience in Connecticut and the weather of his childhood in Oswego, New York.  In between there were references to tornados in the midwest, the tsumanis in Indonesia and Japan, and the recent typhoon in the Philippines.  Each of Maxon’s tales of weather triggered dozens of questions from his curious audience.

Cobb’s students helped Maxon compile a list of weather around the world: what Maxon referred to as “a list of [his] life.”  The children contributed everything from wind and fog to snow and beyond.  They listed close to 15 types of weather before Maxon had to add his own two -- sleet and freezing rain.  Clearly, he’s got his winter work on his mind.

And in terms of work, Maxon had his entire audience captivated with the details of his days (more like nights!).  Maxon told the children that about the same time they might be waking from a bad dream or calling out for a glass of water, he was getting ready for work.  Most of them understood how difficult it must be to wake up at 2:15am every day!  Maxon then described the tasks before him as he made his way to noon.  Being a weatherman surely has its challenges, but Maxon exudes such enthusiasm for the subject that no one doubted how much he loves it.

After his presentation, Maxon visited The Cobb School’s science lab where he took time to discuss with a few students the school’s weather station.  This was an added treat at the end of a delightful afternoon.

Although thousands of people rely on Bob Maxon to deliver the weather every weekday morning, it is easy to see how thousands of students would also benefit if Maxon ever made the classroom his home.  Maybe it’s only natural for a weatherman to be in his element when educating others.
