The reasons are many, but the result is clear. A significant number of Grandparents are finding themselves hitting Open House at the school instead of hitting the golf course. By some estimates, there are more than 60,000 such households here in Connecticut.
Granby and East Granby are no strangers to this phenomenon. These families face unique challenges. The Golden Years may suddenly include diapers, college applications, parent teacher meetings and questions about health insurance, guardianship, or DCF. On top of the practical issues of raising a grandchild are the emotional issues that go along with the reason for the shift from parent to grandparent as caretaker. Financial hardship may force a parent to take a job far from home, a death, drug abuse, legal issues, all these issues carry an emotional impact that can make parenting more difficult.
If you or someone you know are in this situation, you are not alone! I invite you to come check out our Around Again Grandparent's Raising Grandchildren support group. Share your perspective on raising children in the 21st century! Laugh, cry, problem solve and learn. This free group meets on Thursday's at noon in the Town of Granby Senior Center. Evening meetings are held on a varying schedule to meet the needs of those Grandparents who cannot attend during the day. Please Call me at (860) 844-5355 for more information.
Our group members want you to know how much having a network of other Grandparents who understand first hand the challenges of parenting as a grandparent has meant to them. "I don't Know how I would have made it" and "This has been my life line" are some of the common comments.
